After many casual conversations with my colleagues, I learned that New York State’s library free legal off-site resources, such as Loislaw access is not a common knowledge. For many practitioners this is very useful resource because it is free. While Loislaw information is primarily limited to New York jurisdiction, it is nonetheless a useful extra tool to have in a pocket. New York State Library gives the following off-site remote access resources: Loislaw, Congressional Universe, LegalTrac, IndexMaster, and State Capital Universe. Two things are required for eligibility: (1) New York residency and (2) a license to practice law in New York. Application is available through this link, and membership extends not only to natural human beings, but to law firms also.
